A hard-luck homeowner facing foreclosure was hours from watching his family home in the Bronx get auctioned away when he was saved by a “miracle” — a last-minute loan from the state.
“I can’t even express what this meant to me,” said Augustine McDowell, 52, of the Bronx, who was laid off from his job with a nonprofit in 2012. “It truly was a miracle.”
The $40,000 loan from Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s Mortgage Assistance Program will help pay off the back taxes on the University Heights home that piled up after McDowell’s mother passed away.
The relief also allows McDowell to keep a roof over the head of a 78-year-old tenant who is suffering from cancer, he said.
The paperwork for the loan was approved on Christmas Eve.
“Everyone involved in the process has been incredible,” McDowell said.
