Fair Housing Suit Draws Support from State AGs

Seventeen state attorneys general are urging the U.S. Supreme Court to maintain the longstanding interpretation of the federal Fair Housing Act to allow challenges to practices that have a “disparate impact” on racial minorities and other protected groups.

The state prosecutors, led by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Massachusetts Attorney Martha Coakley, filed an amicus brief with the court in, Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs v. The Inclusive Communities Project, 13-1371, a Texas housing discrimination case.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments on Jan. 21.
